Seven of the hottest celebrities’ fashion labels, both local and international, that we love…
Celebrity fashion lines can be so gimmicky; they really don’t always have the best reputation or industry longevity. The likes of Lindsay Lohan and Heidi Montag tried their hand at the fashion game, and were booed off the metaphorical stage.
But there are some celebrities who prove that their creative chops go further than just singing and acting.
‘Colour’ by Nandi Madida
Socialite and musician Nandi Madida has always been a fashion icon in the eyes of many South Africans. She inspires with her music and her natural hair and unique dress sense.
So it made perfect sense when she teamed up with local designer Inga Madyibi to create the fashion label Colour. Making its debut at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in 2016, South Africa fell in love. The beautiful colours, the striking silhouettes and the authentic African prints make this one of my favourite celebrity fashion lines. It was just as well received this year at New York Fashion Week (she worked with Josh Patron on 2018’s line).
‘Ivy Park’ for TopShop
Ivy Park is the brainchild of mega superstar Beyoncé, in collaboration with TopShop, and it produces active wear of another level. This fashion-forward training wear takes the athleisure trend up a notch with inspired utilitarian, functional and trendy pieces. Best of all, it’s available right here in South Africa from TopShop!
‘Era’ by DJ Zinhle
South African DJ and motivational speaker Zinhle Jiyane, also known as DJ Zinhle, launched a line of his-and-hers watches in 2015. The coolest thing about this range is the funky, stackable bracelets to add to your watch. Mix and match or simply get a beautiful and affordable timepiece, and all locally created!
‘Fenty’ for Puma by Rihanna
She is undoubtedly fearless when it comes to her music, and the same goes with Rihanna’s fashion. This collaboration took the world by storm. In fact, I think Rihanna is single-handedly responsible for making furry slip-on shoes cool – yes, Rihanna brought us the cool slide, and we can’t get enough!
‘Good American’ by Khloé Kardashian and Emma Grede
Born from conversations Khloé Kardashian had with her friend Emma Grede, Good American was all about making jeans that fit all body shapes and sizes. The brand promotes body positivity, includes plus sizes, and thus breaks down the stigma around dressing plus size or curvy models.
This gets two thumbs-up from me – a girl with a small waist and big bum (who struggles to get jeans that fit me in both places)!
‘The Row’ by Ashleigh and Mary Kate Olsen
Ok, so they do dress a little strangely, but Ashleigh and Mary-Kate are a fashion power house. The luxury brand called The Row was created in 2006. That’s a long time to keep a brand alive unless it has true fashion merit.
The line is sleek and stylish, yet plays homage to the twins’ signature looks. The brand has since extended to ready-to-wear, handbags, eyewear and footwear. Now we just need them to open a branch in South Africa…
‘Kendall + Kylie’ by Kendall and Kylie Jenner
They may not always get along, but they do know how to make money! And they have come together to create the fashion line Kendall + Kylie Collection. The designs are simple and wearable, and not necessarily fashion forward, but I imagine that’s the point – to be super trendy and appeal to the masses.
If you like trendy clothes that you don’t have to really think too hard about, then this just might be the brand for you.
