You wouldn’t wash your car with a chemical cleaner that damaged the paint job, would you? So why would you put your skin through a similar ordeal? You may wonder why harmful, bad ingredients still make it into skincare products. The answer: because they are cheap and help to make it look pretty. They make it smell nice and feel silky. When our skin goes haywire, we generally have no idea how to sort it out and grab the first item that promises a solution. This usually worsens the problem. But what should you do? Reading this article is your first step!
The Big Cleanse
If you are anything like the beauty department here at people, then you are addicted to cosmetics, body and skincare products. You spend far too much money and time in the beauty aisles, checking out the latest products and filling your bathroom cupboards with more random bottles than you could ever hope to use. The first rule to learn is that less is more. Yes, even when it comes to taking care of skin. What we recommend is a total overhaul on beauty. Start from scratch. We aren’t suggesting that you go completely au natural, but get rid of all the unnecessary items in your vanity. When there are fewer products to choose from, you will begin to realize how many items you don’t need. Now you can spend more cash on a higher quality skincare regime. You will also discover that a single product could have multiple uses. Conditioner, for example can also work as a shaving lotion.
Detoxifying your beauty routine is not as intimidating as it seems. All it takes is a bit of education about ingredients and paying closer attention to what works for your skin. Soon the healthy glowing skin that’s idealised (and airbrushed) on celebs can be yours for real.
Star Skin Tip: “I tend to buy dozens of creams which I’ve dipped my finger in only once. I probably own about 20 different gels and creams for night time that are sitting in my bathroom cabinet at this moment.” – Cameron Diaz
The Non-Negotiables
Regardless of age, gender and skin issues, two products that everyone needs is a good antioxidant serum and sunscreen. An antioxidant serum protects skin from oxidative stress and premature aging. Serums aren’t the cheapest skincare products, but you only need a few drops each morning and one bottle will last a few months. You will save a fortune on anti-aging skincare down the line. Wear sunscreen every day. Not everyone needs moisturiser, in fact a common mistake is too overload on moisturiser. A good sunscreen already contains moisturiser, so unless you suffer from dry skin, you do not necessarily need another product.

Star Skin Tip: “The number one beauty tip Scott Barnes (J-Lo’s make-up artist) has taught me is to stay out of the sun. We’ve always worked with bronzers and self-tanners instead. It’s been over 10 years now that Scott has been telling me to stay out of the sun and it has saved my skin.” – Jennifer Lopez
